I am from the German speaking part of Switzerland. After majoring in Japanese and Chinese studies along with Russian language and literature studies at the University of Zurich, I came to Japan to study early modern Japanese history at Hokkaido University.
My research focuses on two areas: One area is German language education and the methods employed in teaching German as a foreign language. In particular, I am interested in active learning methods and vocabulary learning strategies . The second area of my research concerns the Northern History of Japan. I study mutual contact and mutual relations in northern Japan and the North Pacific Region, looking specifically at Japan, Russia, European countries and indigenous people. I am especially interested in Japan-Russia relations and the history of the Ainu on the Kuril Islands.
